Fire ants are a group of aggressive, reddish-brown to black ants known for their painful stings and burning bites. The term "fire ant" refers to over 280 species of stinging ants in the genus Solenopsis, native to South America. Appearance: Fire ants are 1/8–1/4 inch long with a darker abdomen and copper brown coloring. Behavior: Fire ants swarm and attack when disturbed, firmly grasping skin with their jaws before stinging and injecting venom. 

The most effective way to get rid of fire ants is a two-step process: baiting to kill the queen and worker ants in the colony, followed by mound treatments with insecticides to target individual mounds. This approach, known as the Two-Step Method, is recommended by experts. 

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

1. Broadcast Baiting:
Apply a fire ant bait product (like Amdro) to your yard, ensuring it's spread evenly to reach all parts of the lawn, including hidden mounds. This bait attracts ants, and the queen and workers consume it, eventually leading to the demise of the entire colony.

 
2. Mound Treatments:
As new mounds appear, use an insecticide drench or mound treatment (dust, granules, or bait) to target the active mound. These treatments kill the ants directly in the mound. 

3. Timing is Key:
Fire ant treatments are most effective during the warmer months when they are actively foraging. Spring and fall are prime times for applying the bait, and mound treatments can be done throughout the season as needed.
